Getting Ahead in Product Management
Question: "Can you provide some insight on how to get ahead career wise in product management?"
Nowadays the meaning of titles has somewhat eroded so there is a need for additional information to qualify the individual beyond their title.
Also, previously a person needed to show progressive work experience and go up the ranks to become an executive. Now tenure could be less important in obtaining a position and the associated title.
My conclusions regarding getting ahead in product management is that professional competency is a focus for many and remains necessary, but it will not suffice.
Many people are competent and have similar work and educational background. Hiring managers and recruiter know that. Consequently soft skills are emerging as the critical differentiating factor between individuals.
But overall, it is real skills, not job titles, which are the new metric in the job market.
